More and more web sites are locking down their content to protect their markets and licensing. Usually this is locked down to a specific country or region. The websites do this by looking at the origin of your IP address when you connect to their web site. This is because my location will normally define what nationality my IP address is, connecting through a French Wifi network in the Charles De Gaulle Airport will obviously give me a French address! The solution centered around proxy and VPN servers and they work surprisingly well and have done for many years.

A few years ago there was lots of choice ranging from free applications like foxy proxy to the hola firefox extension which you could use for nothing. None of these work anymore, you need the next level which cannot be detected.

These are servers which sit in between your connection and the website you are trying to access. The same goes for the channels like NBC and Pandora — simply connect through a US based computer and you can access these as well. In fact if you have access to a selection of these servers across the world then you can use whatever website you wish wherever you happen to be.

Another small update. Also it's one of the few that will still work with Netflix. It only redirects to these versions currently because of the way Netflix chose to block VPNs. They now restrict access from all commercial registered IP addresses. Identity Cloaker now has some residential addresses specifically for Netflix but unfortunately they are much more expensive. Identity Cloaker is relatively low key and never advertises it's ability to watch TV on it so tends to get ignored. If you've paid up front for another service ask them if they have any other IP addresses you can use, although the BBC have blocked lots of services most of them have switched IP addresses to bypass this.
